Rene Leenders, P. Seelen Grubbenvorst:

"We rolled from Turkish TOV into pomegranates"

Many businesses in the fruit and vegetable trading sector will know P. Seelen as a vegetable importer. This company is based in Grubbenvorst, the Netherlands. Yet, for the past five years or so, this trading company has had Turkish pomegranates on offer from the Dutch town of Venlo.

"Ten years ago, we started with Turkish tomatoes. That is what got the ball rolling. We get the pomegranates from our own growers. It is going very well," says Rene Leenders.

The new Turkish pomegranate season has started again. "We have Hicaz pomegranates. Prospects look good, and the quality of the first pomegranates are excellent. We expect many large-sized fruits," says Rene. "Prices started very high, but these usually start dropping within the first few weeks. Next week we will start with our Tsjakka house brand."

P. Seelen sells most of its pomegranates on the German market. They do, however, see more potential for sales on the Dutch market. "Last year, we had an excellent pomegranate season, both in quality and price. Spain is often our biggest competitor, but they grow completely different varieties," he explains.

"We expect our first Turkish TOV towards December. This will again be under our Prins label. This label has garnered the necessary acclaim on the market," Rene goes on to say.

When asked if there are more Turkish products in the pipeline, he answers, "In mid-October, we are expecting our first quinces. We get these directly from our own growers too."
