Pomegranates produced in Southern China have been pouring into Linyi since August. According to Jiaxing Fruit Wholesale Market, between August 16 and September 16, the early stage of the 2019 pomegranate season, trading volume reached 5659.4 tons, a year-on-year increase of 91.84%.
Years ago, pomegranates from Zaozhuang occupied a monopoly position in the Linyi market. Today, pomegranates from Sichuan and Yunnan have seized this market while products from Zaozhuang have nearly lost their competitiveness. In particular, the fruit from Huili, Sichuan commands the best sales for its uniqueness, widely favored by consumers in Linyi.
Large volumes are on the market from August to October each year. Relatively speaking, the price of Sichuan soft-seed pomegranates from Huili is higher than that of the hard-seed variety from Yunnan, nearly 10 yuan higher per kilogram but still very popular. This is mainly due to the unique ecological environment that is enjoyed by this production area, which gives the fruit a thin skin, bright color, large arils, soft seeds, a sweet taste, and ample juice.
