Macfrut in Medellin: visit to the market and participation in the trade fair

In Colombia there could be room for more Italian fruit

Some of the fruit sold at the market in Medellin, Colombia, is European. It comes mostly from Spain. This is what Renzo Piraccini, Macfrut president, noticed a few days ago during his visit to the market, on the sidelines of the internationalisation actions of the Italian fruit and vegetable fair.

"In Medellin," explains Piraccini, "they hold the second biggest fruit and vegetable wholesale market in Colombia, after the one in Bogotà. Besides fruit and vegetable, other foodstuffs such as fish and meat are sold. Boxes are managed by wholesalers who receive the local product and sell it to retailers or peddlers. Large retailers, though, have their own platforms and do not use this channel."

The production is primarily local. In fact, in Colombia almost anything can be produced: thanks to the differences in climate caused by the different altitudes: you can grow tropical fruit or fruit typical of temperate areas in the same country. The main imported products are apples, mostly coming from Chile. While grapes, cherries, apples and stone fruits are imported from Europe. I could see a lot of fruit from Spain.

About Macfrut’s presence in Colombia
Expo Agrofuturo fair 2019 was held from 18th to 20th September in Medellin. Italy, as an important partner country, managed a maxi area at the fair, including 37 Italian companies from the fruit and vegetable sector, mostly technology producers, but also packaging and production.

Expo Agrofuturo is organised by Corferias, the public society that manages the main exhibition centres in Colombia. Corferias has signed an exclusive partnership agreement with Macfrut concerning the Italian fruit and vegetable sector.

The area was organised by Ice Agenzia, in cooperation with Federunacoma and Unioncamere Emilia Romagna.

Piraccini: "I am really satisfied with our partnership with Corferias. It offers the Italian companies new business opportunities in the Colombian market. We are proving that acting together as an Italian system is a great advantage for everyone."
