The harvest will start in a week

Spanish kakis unaffected by recent storms

Although the trees are not far from the affected areas, luckily Spanish kaki production and marketing was not damaged by last weekend's storms which hit Alicante, Almeria, Murcia, Valencia.

"Despite the heavy rainfall, there was no damage reported to the trees and fruit. The severe thunderstorms have destroyed several crops and facilities, especially in the area south of Alicante,” says David, a young producer from Valencia who owns a 6 ha orchard planted with Rojo Brillante.

“The production is excellent and the kakis are ripening. We will start the harvesting in less than a week, thanks to agronomic techniques which help the ripening process to speed up.”

Climate anomalies do not discourage the farmers. Spain is going to start harvesting and marketing soon, while Italian farmers will have to wait a few more weeks.

In Italy decreasing volumes are expected for the upcoming season. Italian producers hope to start the season peacefully, without trade wars on sales prices or the loss of market shares.
