“Chinese red onion exports boosted by lower production in India”

India has been hit by heavy rainfall since early August, eventually leading to flooding in several regions, including the main onion production areas. Floods directly led to a severe drop in red onion production. “The demand for red onions has increased substantially from last week. Due to the sharp decline in the supply from India, most buyers are now considering importing from China, so the price of Chinese red onions has rocketed since last week, but has stabilized somewhat this week,” Mr. Jack Meng from Jining Greenfarm Import And Export Co., Ltd. said.

In addition to exporting to India, red onions from China are also popular in other Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern countries. “The harvest of red onions starts in May and the crop becomes available on the market in batches. Chinese products are very popular in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. For example, Malaysia is the main export destination of our products, while Thailand, the Philippines, and the Middle East are close behind. "

“This year's sale of red onions has been even smoother than in previous years. Most onions have been sold shortly after harvest and fewer onions are stored in cold storage. In other years, most onions were placed in cold storage after harvest to be sold in the winter, while the current stock in the cold storage is very small. I expect the products to be sold out earlier than usual this year."

Jining Greenfarm Import and Export Co., Ltd. not only supplies red onions but also yellow onions. "Our yellow onions this year became available on the market last month. Production is similar to last year and the quality is better. The price is relatively stable and there are no big fluctuations. Last year, we opened up new export markets, and the export volume to these markets was satisfactory, especially in Europe, where local onion production experienced a significant drop, so the demand for Chinese onions was strong.

However, it is not the case this year. Most countries are again ordering European onions. Perhaps the price of European onions will fall again, and Chinese onions will face many challenges in competing with them. Despite this, we are still exporting products to several countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East,” concludes Jack Meng.
