"Double-digit sales increase in retail and hospitality products"

Photo report: Visiting Metro C + C Dusseldorf

On the occasion of this year's DOGK in Dusseldorf the metro market invited visitors to the brand new market hall. Store manager Michael Widmer led the interested parties through the 2018 newly opened and modular cash & carry market and showed the different worlds of experience. The highlight was, not surprisingly, the abundant fruit and vegetable selection.

Worlds of Experience characterize Metro's innovative shop concept. In the picture: A look into the fruit and vegetable department.

The Düsseldorf Metro market reopened in 2018 following a major renovation: The new store concept was also implemented in Düsseldorf after two pilot projects in Nuremberg and a successful launch in Krefeld. Large parts of the shop have a modular structure and can be taken elsewhere at will. Nonetheless, the restructuring was carried out in close dialogue with regular customers, Widmer said.

Above all, a careful customer segmentation was important for the Düsseldorf branch. That is, the Metro Dusseldorf is not 100% focused on Horeca, but also trade customers have to feel comfortable in the market hall. "We have successfully separated the gastro and trader assortment. We are currently achieving double-digit sales growth, partly because of the high growth rates in the area of ethnic gastronomy, "said Widmer.

Service around the product is one of the hallmarks of Metro: Mushrooms and salads are placed in the cold store, so they stay fresh at the PoS.

Furthermore, the modern C+C market has been equipped with a completely new entrance area to increase efficiency and enhance the shopping experience. Every customer who leaves the Dusseldorf branch will automatically receive a questionnaire by e-mail. "So we know if the shopping experience pleases the customer and we get a lot of feedback on our store concept," adds Widmer.

Fruits and vegetables from A to Z: Apples to Zucchinis

The fruit and vegetable assortment includes a wide selection of regional and international produce and leaves nothing to be desired. Classic German vegetable products such as cabbage, potato and leek are sourced from the neighborhood almost all year round. Seasonal products such as salads and herbs also offer local produce where possible. Rounding out the fresh selection with tropical fruits and exotic animals from all over the world.

Pre-Cut herbs in sustainable packaging.

Parallel to the product selection on the vegetable shelf, the service around it is becoming more and more important, Widmer knows. On the occasion of the social packaging discussion, Metro is also trying to offer novel and, if possible, 100% sustainable alternatives: "Packaging is also a huge topic for us. An important step by us was, for example, to introduce sustainable herb packaging."
