Over the past few years, the overall sales of fruit juice were penalized by a change in consumption trends, with consumers looking mainly for healthy products. When choosing food and beverages, Italians have been increasingly aware as regards sugar content.
"Identifying the radical changes in consumer behavior and modifying the supply are key elements to compete on the market and especially in the fruit juice one. We are not affected by the sector crisis because we process niche products (Sicilian citrus fruit into juice and candied fruit) of which there are no great quantities. This is mainly due to the drop in production caused by climate change and diseases which had negative consequences for the citrus fruit segment," explains Maria Antonietta Calabrò, owner and quality system manager for Canditfrucht.
Canditfrucht is located in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto (ME) and was set up by Santi Calabrò. In addition to being an important point of reference for the agricultural and industrial production, the company has also worked on many projects: from rigorous checks along the whole chain and production traceability to international certifications.
"Our flagship products are orange and lemon juices, available both as traditional and organic. Of course the leading product is blood orange juice, of which we sell over 30 million liters. Oranges come from the Catania plain and we process them during the production period, while we process all lemon varieties all year round. We use every part of the fruit: we extract essential oils from the peel and juice from the flesh."
La Mora Siciliana was founded three years ago for the packaging of citrus juice and various fruit purees. The production cycle goes from the preparation of juice blends to their packaging in PET and glass bottles.
"I limoni di Don Nunzio" is the Caditfrucht brand named after Maria Antonietta's father, the president of the company, and is a sort of tribute to his great experience in citrus fruit processing.
Obtained by pressing the best Sicilian lemons, it is the only 100% pure lemon juice with no GMOs, allergens, SO2, coloring and added sugar available on the market.
It is sold in pouches, an innovative solution that maintains the aroma and organoleptic properties unaltered.
Germany, the Netherlands and France are the markets of reference when it comes to candied fruit and juices, but the company also works with the US and Japan (80% of the turnover is made abroad). 20% of the products are supplied to Nestlè Italia, especially concentrates for orangeades.
