Market Report Austria KW 38/2019:

'Main potato harvest coming online, onion prices well maintained'

The Austrian table potato market is determined by the current main crop. The harvesting conditions are good in many places and the harvest is progressing accordingly. Not quite as optimal are the storage conditions, due to the relatively high temperatures. The current harvest results support previous assessments. The goods are small in many places, which is why the yield per hectare varies greatly, but nationwide everything is on a manageable level. Qualitatively, there are also problems with wireworm and the like, but they are still limited.

Potato sales are described as 'seasonally good'. Planned promotions in the food retailing provide additional sales volumes. Producer prices are largely stable, and a price discount is calculated for stored goods. In Lower Austria, at the beginning of the week, a price range of 22 Euro / 100 kg for stored goods up to 28 Euro / 100 kg was mentioned. In Upper Austria, the harvest is progressing quickly, with equally good harvesting conditions. The prices remained stable here at 34 euros / 100 kg.

Onion prices well balanced
The harvest of Austrian onions is progressing rapidly after the short-term weather-related interruptions of the previous week. The offer is plentiful accordingly. Domestic demand is fundamentally satisfactory, in line with the season. Ongoing actions within food retailing provide an additional impetus. On the export market, it is still quiet. Producer prices can hold their ground at the previous week level. Onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on the quality and size, usually go for between 23 and 28 Euro / 100 kg.

Stable carrot market
The Lower Austrian Carrot Market shows itself to be quite stable. There is still no marketing pressure. The harvest volumes are well adapted to current needs at this point in time. The prices remain unchanged compared to last week.
