Niels Zuurbier, grower’s association Everest:

Lettuce shortage in Spain remains to be seen, changeable season so far for growing and sales

Whether the price of iceberg lettuce is going to rise as a result of the flooding in Spain will become clear in the coming weeks, according to Niels Zuurbier of the Dutch Kwekerij Ursem-Zuurbier, which is a member of the grower’s association, Everest. “I don’t see any immediate consequences right now, but if it becomes clear there will be shortages, we’ll undoubtedly notice it.”

“Lettuce prices started rising rapidly last week, and customers have to get used to this increase in price. Iceberg lettuce is currently selling for prices around €5.50, which is a decent price,” says Niels, who characterises the season as changeable. “Prices are fair, but it’s a very changeable season regarding growth and sales. One minute it’s very busy and the next, demand suddenly drops. As a result, prices are fluctuating unnecessarily.”
