China: "Garlic market situation for the coming weeks not optimistic"

“In the past few months, the overall market situation of garlic in China was weak, and prices were low. Prices of the new crop were high at the beginning of the season this year due to generally high market prices last year, a result of speculation, but have been declining continuously with the sharp increase in supply and a greatly weakened market consumption capacity," according to Li Kaiwen from Qingdao Sinonut Import & Export Co., Ltd.

“Although the total planted area of garlic in China has decreased by about 20% compared with last year, the total production of last year was unusually high. Therefore, even though the planted area has been reduced, judging by absolute production figures, this year's production is still higher than usual, which has had an impact on the market."

“The new garlic season came to a close in September after a three-month harvest. In general, the quality is good. When combined with the low price, there is a strong ability in absorbing production in the local market. In addition, the export market is relatively smooth. Currently, the export price to Europe is about 1,200 US dollars per ton. In addition to Europe, we also export to the Middle East countries such as Dubai."

“The garlic market in the next few weeks is still difficult to predict. The overall price will not experience large fluctuations but may rise slightly. In addition to garlic, we also export ginger and frozen fruit and vegetables such as frozen carrots, spinach balls, strawberries, and yellow peaches to overseas markets. Compared with fresh products, the market price of frozen products fluctuates less and the demand is relatively stable."
