China: "Entering export markets with high-quality fruit and fine packaging"

Production of various fruits in China has been increasing year by year, and new fruit varieties are also emerging. In today's increasingly competitive market, only unconventional varieties with breakthroughs in taste and appearance can stand out and win the favor of consumers. Sunshine Rose, one of the most popular grapes in the international market, is one of those varieties.

Tony of Lurra has been researching and handling Sunshine Rose grapes for several years. “We started to look into the cultivation of the Sunshine Rose in 2014. Working together with growing centers in a few production areas, local production has been increasing year by year. In 2017, we also introduced this variety from South Korea, with a total import volume of 32 tons, and we expect it to reach 300 tons this year. Of course, in the next few years, this figure may continue to grow,” he commented.

In addition to grapes from South Korea, Lurra also offers other varieties such as xiahei and kyoho. The total production of these varieties was 70 tons in 2017 and has increased to 1,000 tons this year. “The production is growing very fast. Our main growing areas are in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong, and Dalian. These areas are located in different parts of China, so we can have a supply period of nearly 6 months from May to October. Thanks to the stable supply, we don’t experience large price fluctuations in the wholesale market."

Lurra's core products currently are different types of grapes, loquats, strawberries, and persimmons. Most of Lurra's fruit is sold in the local market. With further growth in mind, Lurra is also considering exporting their products.

In the past few years, they have channelled more time and energy into improving product quality and production and standardizing the production process. This year, they successfully exported loquats to Indonesian supermarkets by air and received a good response in the local market. “Loquat is a very delicate fruit, which is reflected in its shelf life. Its shelf life is very short and the fruit is easily scratched, so we designed a special layered packing for them, which makes it possible for them to reach customers without damages. Sea freight is not suitable for transporting loquats but the air freight is better.

Since it is difficult to predict the condition of the fruit when it reaches the destination country, we send a few batches first before shipping large volumes. After having accumulated enough experience, we found that loquats can be exported if we ensure that the packaging is good."

Wit the upgraded consumption, Lurra believes that good fruit should have both excellent taste and appearance. Therefore, Lurra's design team is working on the right and best-looking packaging for each fruit, so we can offer an attractive appearance after the safety of the fruit is taken care of.

“We started with a small fruit shop. After years of perseverance and hard work, we finally gained a foothold in the Chinese fruit wholesale and retail market today. We are proud of the achievements we have made over the past years and will continue to work hard and hope to export our fruits to foreign countries so that they can also taste the quality fruit from China."
