E-commerce boosting sales of colored potatoes in China

“There are relatively few companies in China producing colored potatoes, so this market is still relatively empty. It is still a niche product, mainly purchased by middle and high-end consumers. We brought our products to Asia Fruit Logistica this year and received a lot of attention from visitors,” said Liu Yibing, Chairman of Gansu Yibing E-Commerce Development Co., Ltd.

“We introduced colored potatoes in 2017. After many trials and varietal improvements, we started to plant them on a large-scale in Gansu Province in 2018. Our growing center covers an area of about 3,000 acres with a yield of about 4 tons per mu, and the total production can reach 12,000 tons. The skin of this category is purple, and the flesh is red and yellow in various shades and evenly distributed, hence the name. In addition, their high anthocyanin content allows them to have antioxidant and cosmetic effects,” said Mr. Liu. “Their harvest season lasts from October to November. Like traditional potatoes, colored potatoes can be stored for a long time and supplied throughout the year.”

“Currently, colored potatoes are sold at 8-12 yuan/kg in China, and special varieties can fetch 15 yuan/kg. The overall market price is relatively stable. Although they are slightly more expensive than ordinary potatoes, their value for money is much higher in terms of quality and nutrition,” shared Manager Liu. “Our products are mainly sold through e-commerce platforms and distributors. Most are sold to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou. For products that require long-distance transportation, we use vacuum packaging.

"For short-distance transportation, we generally use 2.5kg plastic boxes.” She further explained that with the popularity of e-commerce platforms, more and more consumers pre-order products online. The online sales of Yibing are growing rapidly, currently reaching about 43% of the total sales. In order to further expand its online business, the company is negotiating with China Telecom and China Post to set up a specialized platform.

“In order to produce safer, healthier, and more delicious products, we strictly control the production process, use manual methods to remove insects and weeds, and ensure that the products are natural and green.” In addition to colored potatoes, Yibing also offers highland specialties such as hotbed chives, cucumbers, and mini watermelons.
