"But they won't replace frozen market completely"

China: "Rising market share for whole frozen durians"

In China, where durian is a popular fruit, only frozen durian pulp was allowed to be imported, which could not meet the growing demand. This summer, whole Malaysian frozen durians gained access to this market. “Chinese consumers are very picky about the taste of different varieties, but as soon as they taste the Musang King variety from Malaysia, they fall in love with it,” Sunny from Onefruit said. “The market for frozen durian flesh is very competitive, so you need to have a good strategy if you want to stand out.”

For them, standing out does not only mean offering a good product but also presenting it to customers as a high-end product and placing it in the right place in supermarkets such as Ole. For packaging, they chose a design with gold and dark, suitable for the high-end market. In addition, they set up a special layout in the supermarket.

“Every supermarket has a small refrigerator for our packaged durian flesh. In order to attract more people, we also created a special design for the exterior of the refrigerator, so It's really eye-catching. Designing a good package and placing it in the right place in the supermarket is a very important step to further develop your brand. In addition, it's also important to effectively display your fruit. This is why we invest a lot of time researching trends and consumer demand to ensure we keep up with market trends."

The volume of whole frozen durians available is increasing rapidly, but it will not completely replace the cold chain durian flesh market. As the price of this variety is quite high, more people prefer to buy frozen flesh instead of a whole durian, so the market will continue to exist. “The main target audience of our fruit is the higher classes who accept the price and appreciate the quality. We supply all Ole supermarkets across China with our own packaging and design.”

Since the whole Malaysian frozen durians gained access to China, the imports of frozen durian from Malaysia have even exceeded the previous level. Sunny from Onefruit also observed this rapid growth and commented, “in the beginning, only frozen durian flesh was allowed to be imported. Although the unfrozen pulp is very fresh, most Chinese consumers still prefer fresh durians from Thailand. However, in terms of varietal preference, Musang King from Malaysia is still the most popular in the market. Now that we are allowed to import whole frozen durians, we are able to better meet the needs of consumers. In addition to the durian flesh, we can also offer whole durians with shells, which consumers consider fresher than durian flesh.”

OneFruit currently offers Shine Muscat grapes from South Korea, Musang King durians from Malaysia, and premium mangos from Australia. They are constantly looking for new high-end fruits and importing them into China. If you are interested, please contact them with the details below.
