Harvesting of PGI potatoes from Sila about to start

The Sila area was affected by heavy rain in May, which delayed sowing and led to non-homogeneous plant growth. Luckily summer was warm and there was enough water for irrigation, therefore quality is excellent. Yields though are expected to be below the average of the past few years.

"The harvesting of Marabel, the earliest variety, will start over the next few days. PGI potatoes from Sila in classic 1.5 and 2 kg vertbags will become available in supermarkets in around 15 days' time," explains Albino Carli, director of Consorzio Produttori Patate Associati-PPAS.

"The past commercial campaign was positive with good prices and good payments to producers who, this year, subjected new crops to the PGI certification. This will partly compensate for the drop in production per yield."

"PGI potatoes from Sila are doing increasingly well on the market. They are available in most big retail chains and consumers appreciate their organoleptic qualities and long shelf-life."

Prices are in line with the quotations of other premium products at €1.60/piece for 1.5 kg vertbags and €2.00/piece for 2 kg ones.
