An employee at Dubai airport may serve jail time for stealing two mangoes from a cargo consignment to India in 2017. The 27-year-old Indian was charged with stealing the fruits at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.
The incident, which occurred in August 2017, occurred when the defendant was loading luggage for a India-bound flight onto a conveyor belt in Dubai Airport's Terminal 3. "I wanted some water and I opened a fruit box and found the mangoes. I ate two mangoes and left," he said. "In April 2018, police summoned me and questioned me about the incident. They searched my home and didn't find any stolen items."
The case of the two stolen mangoes was solved when an airport security guard saw the defendant open the passengers' bag on the surveillance cameras. The verdict is expected on September 23, according to Gulf News. If found guilty, the defendant may face time in jail. The total value of the two mangoes is six Dirhams (£1.30).
