Nectarines set to become increasingly popular

A technical meeting on late peach cultivars and summer apples was held at Agrion (Foundation for research, innovation and technological development in Piedmont) in Manta (CN) on 10th September 2019. The event was hosted by experts Lorenzo Berra and Davide Nari, who presented the latest varieties and materials interesting for the Piedmont region.

When it comes to peaches, it is important to continue researching materials and opportunities for the market despite the sector problems. As for apples, new Gala clones mainly of French origin were presented.

Tests carried out in 2019 generated good results for yellow nectarine cultivars Alma2, Kinolea and Febe, yellow peach cultivars Sweet Dream, M4441 and M4469, white nectarine cultivars Fercluse, Ferlot and Ferlate as well as industry peaches with a low sensitivity to Monilia.

Late yellow nectarine cultivars were harvested in the second half of August: Alma2 produces large fruits with an oblong-round regular shape with a well-balanced aromatic flavor (11.4 °Brix - 9.8 meq/100ml); Kinolea is a new cultivar that has the potential of producing large fruits with a regular round shape and a sweet aromatic flavor (14.3°Brix - 6.4 meq/100ml); Febe is the latest variety (late August) producing very large fruits with an acidic aromatic flavor (13.2 °Brix - 9.2 meq/100ml).

As for yellow peaches, Sweet Dream plants are easy to manage with a high productivity of large fruits having a round-oblong shape and a sub-acidic flavor (10.2°Brix - 3 meq/100ml); M4441 and M4469 are good introductions and are defined as stony hard due to the firmness of their fruits.

When it comes to white nectarines, Majestic Pearl produces appealing good-sized fruit with a round regular shape, some russeting, a sweet aromatic flavor with low acidity (10.3°Brix - 5.1 meq/100ml) and good texture.

Apple orchards increased by 1000 hectares between 2006 and 2010. The discussion ranged from the summer varieties that ripen 25 days earlier than Gala (e.g. Early Crunch) to those part of the Gala group such as SchniCo Red Gala Schniga, Devil Gala, Gala Star Galafab, Galaval.

T-REX CIVT15 and French Galarich, Galabess, Gala Briss and Gala Laveè Wydler clones were also presented. When it comes to Gala apples, the data for 2019 report good appearance and color, sufficient grades, a high firmness level of around 7-8 kg/cm2 and a high sugar content of around 12-12.5°Brix.
