The greenhouse lettuce market is not too bad. This is according to Henk van Doorne. He is a grower and trader at Van Doorne Imex. This company is based in 's-Gravenzande, the Netherlands.
"After a long, difficult period, prices are picking up again. The lettuce is currently going all over the world. Most of the lettuce we harvest is flown to distant destinations. It is also sold to domestic retailers."
Whether this will continue, is, of course, the question. "August and September are generally good periods in the lettuce market. In October and November, it can sometimes be a little more difficult," Henk knows.
"However, the supply is the determining factor here. There are always players on the market. We can, therefore, serve the market well. But, when the opportunistic farmers come onto the market, volumes fluctuate. That can often disrupt the market."
The fungal disease, Fusarium, is still a real scourge for greenhouse growers. "It remains a real problem. Breeders are, however, very busy. They are trying to bring the right disease-resistant varieties on the market. It has not yet come this far, but we remain hopeful," concludes Henk.
