Potatoes, carrots, onions: Belgian company Deprez Handling Solutions develops automated systems for handling agricultural products for its customers. This specialist also relies on the Pallet Box from Cabka: The large load carrier made of plastic is a success with its high load capacities, is perfectly suited for safe use in high-bay racking and enables a smooth operation of the time- and cost-efficient handling systems.
Deprez is a family business: founded in 1984 by Johan Deprez: He has since been running the company together with his wife Germana. Originally, Deprez developed machines for the handling of potatoes. Later those for carrots, onions, as well as bulk and recyclable goods were added. Over the years, Deprez successfully developed an automatic box handling system in combination with an automated warehouse. This concept was introduced in 2008 and since its launch Deprez has doubled its capacity.
Interim storage increasingly in demand within agriculture
For many years, Deprez has seen potato packers increasingly need intermediate storage solutions. Previously, there was no such strong classification of the product, especially in the field of potatoes. The increasing demands of the customers on the food retail then finally led to the new system. This storage must be hygienic and according to the classifications, therefore, the best possible storage option, not made of wood, was sought.
Together with a customer, Johan Deprez developed a fully automated solution in which the Pallet Box by Cabka plays a central role. The Pallet Box has a capacity of 1,400 liters and is made of impact-resistant, chemical-resistant and food-safe HDPE. With a weight of 69 kilograms in perforated and 72 kilograms in closed design, it can handle high loads in the stack up to 7,000 kilograms dynamic and when used in high-bay warehouses up to 1,000 kilograms. Non-slip rubber profiles on the top edges of the pallet box ensure the safe stacking of up to seven boxes, one above the other. The containers are designed for applications in the temperature range of minus 30 to plus 50oCelsius.
Fully automatic, from harvest to shipment
After harvesting and washing, the potatoes are sorted by an optical sorting system - according to their size - after which they are put in the pallet boxes. Depending on requirements, the loaded boxes are stored in high bays or fed directly to the packaging line. During subsequent use, an Orbiter Box Tipper integrated in the system can automatically empty the boxes into the corresponding packaging lines. The entire handling process, from the arrival of the products to the shipping of the finished goods, is conducted without one single manual step.
Every time Deprez plans a process automation solution with a new customer, they recommend the use of the Cabkas Pallet Box. Deprez systems are so heavily interlocked with the use of pallet boxes that it would no longer be possible to guarantee a smooth operation with another box. The companies that use the Pallet Box in Deprez's integrated systems are gaining a great advantage over their competitors, as so far fully automated handling is still rare.
