Prices come back down on onions

Domestic onion supplies are building as harvest gets underway.

“We’re just harvesting our fall storage crop so right now we have good supplies. They’re going into our storage building through to March and into April,” says Jessica Peri of Peri & Sons Farms in Yerington, Nev., noting that harvest began on time in mid-August.

Some supplies for Peri are coming from Firebaugh, Ca. though most of production has just transitioned over to Nevada. “We’re seeing sizing trending a bit larger on onions this year compared to years past,” says Peri. “On some of the early varieties, they’re a bit smaller but the later varieties, we’re seeing larger sizes.” She attributes the change to some developments in growing techniques for Peri & Sons, which grows conventional and organic onions.

Pricing down
With domestic supplies building, the market is finding itself with good availability for onions. “It’s a difficult market because there are a lot of regions going—especially in the Northwest with Idaho and Oregon,” says Peri. “The prices are depressed and everyone’s going after every order. We do see it every year though.”

The pricing has dropped back down after a strong year in pricing on onions. “Starting 2019, the onion market was really short. Prices were through the roof for most of the winter and spring and then they came down a little bit. And all summer, we’ve seen high prices on onions,” says Peri. “And then as soon as production came on board in August, pricing went down. But the prices are comparable to last year. They always slip a bit at this time of year because there are a lot of shippers shipping.” She anticipates pricing will stay where it’s at for the next six to eight weeks.

New packaging for Nevada white onions
On top of making its way through the fall harvest, Peri & Sons, which is celebrating the company’s 40th year in the business, is also launching a new marketing campaign around its Nevada white onions. “They’re famous for how bright white they are and their flavour and texture so we’re putting together some marketing around that that includes new packaging and features recipes,” says Peri.
