Freshly squeezed juice segment continues to grow at European retailers

After almost a decade with juice consumption declining in Europe, the growing concern for health and food sustainability has led to a profound change in trends. This has been driven by ZUMEX®, a strategic global leading partner in the development of the juice business, with the growth of new juice categories, such as “freshly squeezed juice in store”, and the rise in the demand for ugly fruits. These developments have been taking place in markets such as Spain, France or the United Kingdom.

Thus, fresh juice squeezed in the stores has recorded a 12% increase in liters and a 15% growth in terms of value; positive figures that contrast with the 4.2% drop in terms of volume and stagnation in terms of value of the nectar juice sector. These data show that while consumers continue to demand citrus juices, they increasingly prefer them in their most natural form, obtained through a self-service experience, in which the user is responsible for its elaboration. These preferences entail an increase in the value of the segment, which has reached an average price of € 3.41 / liter, and which is the one that generates the most value for the juice sector.

ZUMEX®, world leader in squeezing systems, has been the key player behind the change of juice consumption trends in Europe with the creation and leadership in this segment. In fact, the ZUMEX® project started precisely with the firm's innovation in squeezing systems.

Fresh juice squeezed in store grows against the flow of the European industry
By countries, 1 in 10 Spanish households is already a regular consumer of freshly squeezed juice; a new category already consolidated in Spain, with a penetration in households of 11%, according to a study developed by ZUMEX®. This research highlights the recent creation of this category in the Spanish market thanks to the implantation of its machines in the main retailer chains.

In the case of France, according to a study carried out by the consulting firm Nielsen, in-store squeezing machines have proven to be the engine of juice growth. The juice category as a whole has only recorded growth in the stores that have a juicer, as opposed to the decline observed in the stores without such machines.

ZUMEX® Group, the world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative solutions for the squeezing of fruits and vegetables, is present in more than 100 countries through an extensive network of distributors and its five subsidiaries (in the US, Mexico, United Kingdom, France and Germany). The headquarters are located in Spain, in the municipality of Moncada, in Valencia.

The company stands out for the development of proprietary technologies and exclusive systems and has three important business lines: Food service & Retail, Food Engineering and Vending.
