Nijs van Zuilen, Berrybrothers:

"Good Dutch soft fruit year"

For several weeks now, BerryBrothers, in the Netherlands, has been sorting their stored redcurrants. "We had hot weather in July. Despite this, we can call it a good crop with excellent quality," says Nijs van Zuilen. "Nevertheless, we did have some sunburn damage to the plants' heads this year."

"Just like every year, we can offer redcurrants year-round. We have seen a lot of demand for redcurrants from our neighboring countries in recent weeks."

Raspberries
"We will soon finish picking our raspberries that are growing under the rain shelters. We will then go on and harvest our greenhouse raspberries. This will continue until mid-October. We have seen production drop by 30-40% in the past few days. This decrease is due to the lower temperatures."

"We have, however, noticed a clear difference in fruit sizes between the outdoor and indoor cultivation. This year we again chose to grow the Kwanza variety. A good m2 yield characterizes this type of raspberry," says Nijs.

Blue and blackberries
"We are busy harvesting the Aurora late variety. We can then deliver our Dutch blueberries until the beginning of October. In recent days, we have seen an increased demand for blueberries."

"The outdoor blackberry crop will also only last a few more weeks. After that, we will pick greenhouse blackberries until the beginning of December. The season is not over. However, we can look back on a good Dutch soft fruit season," Nijs concludes.
