M&S will be relegated from FTSE 100

Carrefour has launched a new “transformation” plan

Foreign supermarkets find competition tough in China
Foreign supermarket chains are struggling to compete on the mainland and should expand their online sales platforms to boost their revenues, industry insiders say. Against a backdrop of declining sales last year as the mainland economy slowed and shopping habits changed, foreign retailers slowed their previously aggressive expansion. "Sales at physical outlets will continue to drop, and foreign retailers should expand their presence online", said Shi Jun, a senior partner with Beijing-based consulting firm Alliance PKU Management Consultants who specialises in advising clients in the retail sector.

France: Carrefour presents ‘transformation’ plans
French supermarket giant Carrefour has launched a new “transformation” plan to revitalise declining hypermarkets in France. Carrefour has 247 hypermarkets in France, representing business worth €21bln and 52% of the country’s hypermarket share. Yet, it has experienced a decline in the popularity and takings of the large-format stores in recent years. New plans include opening three new types of stores. These will include one “low cost” model, focused on cut-price deals and self-service checkouts; another named “Rebond” will focus on shops that are currently losing money - although further precise details on this have not yet been confirmed. The third will be a concept called “Next”, which Carrefour says will be “more efficient, unique, and multi-channel”.

Australia: Compass points to higher sales
Grocery retailers in the US including Walmart have been using data technology to combat the lost-sales problem for years. Now, Australian supermarkets are starting to see the power behind this data. In April, Woolworths became the first Australian retailer to invest in a free lost-sales monitor, called Compass, which allows suppliers to monitor the performance of their products in each store. Compass draws on historical sales patterns to calculate dynamic daily sales expectations for every product in every store, and alerts suppliers if sales drop below expectations. As a result out-of-stock or merchandising issues can be solved faster.
