Just a week before the end of the Conference pear harvest in the plots included in the PDO Pera de Lleida, the companies that are part of the Protected Designation of Origin already expect the total volume of pears in the 2019/2020 campaign to exceed 16 million kilos, with 10 million of them meeting the strict requirements of the PDO and allowed to be sold under the PDO label.
The Conference is the latest of the three pear varieties under the PDO and accounts for 66% of the total volume, while the Limonera represents 18% and the Blanquilla, 16%.
After a spring with temperature fluctuations and the summer heat wave, the next campaign is expected to be good, with large caliber fruits, with russeting (in the case of the Conference) and a high sugar content.
Gerard Pujol Verdú, current president of the Regulatory Council of the PDO Pera de Lleida, is convinced that this can be a high quality pear campaign. "Our commercial department is working and closing deals to increase the presence of the PDO in more retail areas. Moreover, this year we will double our marketing budget in order to advertise the brand through different promotions that we will announce shortly."
