Seasonal mushrooms: A good level of consumption even during summer

Until a few years ago, mushrooms were generally associated with the autumn and winter seasons. Nowadays this is no longer the case and the product is consumed during every month of the year, even in summer. This is what Giampaolo Evangelisti from Fungo Cesena declares.

Giampaolo Evangelisti and Letizia Sirri from Fungo Cesena. The third partner is Fabio Montalti.

"In the last two months, the sales were very good, and sometimes they grew also due to the lack of vegetables available on the market as a result of bad weather conditions. The production of mushrooms, on the other hand, is constant as they are grown in protected cultures and are weighted according to the needs of the market. We are satisfied because the number of our customers is increasing", says Giampaolo Evangelisti.

During summer, the demand coming from large-scale retail trade slightly decreases, as opposed to the demand from wholesale markets which increases. This is because there is a significant shift of people from large cities to resorts and these places are often supplied by the markets.

"We registered a high demand for fresh mushrooms from the areas of the Adriatic Riviera, Puglia and Sardinia. We are also working a lot with the "Mercato di Cagliari"(Cagliari Market, translator's note), for example. We are able to reach large-scale retail trade platforms and wholesalers throughout the entire country in a reasonable time frame and this has allowed us to significantly increase our sales. The added value of mushrooms lies in the freshness, which is why our supply chain is organized in such a way that they arrive at the point of sale within 24 hours", explains Giampaolo Evangelisti.

In recent months, Fungo Cesena has introduced a high quality line rich in service, namely fresh daily champignons cut by hand and packaged in various weights (see the article published on FreshPlaza on 6/06/2019).
