China's first mobile modified atmosphere R&D center opens in Pingnan

In recent years, the Chinese government has been channelling a lot of energy into promoting technical integration and upgrading within the agricultural sector. New policies with great focus offering support have been put in place. In order to increase the value of the fruit industry and expand the markets, the Pingnan County Government has decided to develop a research and development center for fruit and vegetable storage.

Pingnan County is a key fruit producing county with a large number of quality fruit varieties. Among them, Shiqi longan is a premium-quality local specialty with thick flesh, small seed, fragrant smell, and sweet, crisp, and refreshing taste. In recent years, the longan production in Pingnan County has been increasing every year, but due to a lack of scientific and effective fresh-keeping technologies, fruit crops come onto the market at the same time without a buffer time in between, resulting in short marketing windows. Moreover, in order to sell quickly, farmers frequently accept low prices. A good harvest, therefore, doesn’t bring them a good income.

Facing frequent food safety incidents in China, Dehezi has always been an advocate of a physical approach. It’s widely known that keeping longan and lychee fruit fresh is a challenge faced worldwide. Modified atmosphere fresh-keeping technology extends the shelf life and maintains the quality of fruit by modifying the components of the atmosphere when the product is in storage. Thailand, the world's largest exporter of longan fruit, uses this technology in its exports.

This technology is also the most advanced fruit fresh-keeping method in the world and the one most widely applied in commercial storage. It’s used in more than 90% of Europe and the United States, while less than 20% in China. Dehezi has nearly ten years’ experience in handling large-scale modified atmosphere fresh-keeping projects and has successfully extended the shelf lives of apples, kiwifruit, dragon fruit, citrus, and pomegranate. It will further its research and development efforts with Dutch companies offering modified-atmosphere technologies and scientific research institutions, in order to introduce the most cutting edge modified-atmosphere technologies to China.

Dehezi will take part in this year’s Asia Fruit Logistica taking place in Hong Kong. Dehezi welcomes customers, no matter old or new, to visit their stand: Stand 3U20N in Hall 3.
