"Bumper Thailand durian harvest still can't satisfy Chinese demand "

"Chinese market demand for durians from Thailand rapidly increased after the durian trade on the Sino-Vietnamese border was called to a halt. The sudden growth of Chinese market demand for Thai durian has drawn the attention of exporters in Thailand who invested in several more durian processing factories for export to China. Even though Thailand enjoyed an abundant durian harvest, the overall supply volume is still unable to satisfy the growing Chinese market demand. In this regard the situation has not changed at all." This is according to manager Li of Qingyang City Qing New Fruit Co Ltd.

"The market prices of durian are based on distinctions in flavor, product quality, and degree of freshness. The average market price of Thai durian was around 21 yuan [2.96 USD] per 0.5 kg in recent years. This year, however, the average market price dropped. The average retail price of durian is around 13-14 yuan [1.84-1.98 USD] per 0.5 kg. However, we expect the market price to rapidly increase in the near future," stated manager Li.

The weather conditions and the geographical conditions in China are not suitable for the production of durian. The fresh durian currently for sale in the Chinese market mainly come from Thailand, where it has a  long history. There are more than 300 durian processing factories in the country.

The durian production season in eastern Thailand begins every year around the 15th of March and continues until around the 15th of June. The durian production season in southern Thailand begins every year around the 15th of July and continues until around the 15th of February in the subsequent year. The durian industry in Thailand can therefore guarantee almost year-round supply of durian and respond to variations in Chinese market demand during different times of the year.

"We have already imported 60 shipping containers of durian so far this year. Each shipping container is around 18 tons. We expect to import a total of 120-150 shipping containers of durian this year. The durian variety that we import from Thailand is the Mon Thong durian. This variety has the largest and most stable production volume of all the durian varieties in Thailand. In this durian variety the seeds are small, the sugar content is high, and the amount of fruit flesh per durian is great. This is the mainstream durian in the market. This variety is also the most popular with consumers," explained manager Li.

"There are many Chinese importers who purchase their durian from Thailand, but most of the durians are sold to wholesale markets or supermarkets before they reach the consumer. We only sell our durian online. This greatly shortens the supply chain and reduces the supply time. We offer durian all year long. Our sales are quite stable. We sell one container every 2 days. We have never experienced an accumulation of stock in storage, but durians are extremely sensitive to temperature. Durians can only stay fresh for around 7 days. The technology required to keep them fresh is one of the main problems each durian importer has to face. Our durian can be traced from the orchard and processing factory. We utilize technology that we developed ourselves to guarantee product quality, freshness, and quick delivery."
