The Chinese export volume of purple sweet potatoes declined this year because of unstable weather conditions in production areas across the country. The price did not experience significant fluctuations. The price of purple sweet potatoes is more or less on the same level as around the same time last year." This is according to manager Chen of Guangdong Fuyi Agricultural Product Co., Ltd.
"We have farms in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Hunan. The overall surface areas of our farms is more than 333 hectares. The main sweet potato variety that we produce on our farms is the purple sweet potato, which is purple inside and out. The wide distribution of our production areas guarantees year-round supply of sweet potatoes. Our company mainly exports sweet potatoes to Canada and Europe. The retail volume in the first half of this year was around 600 tons. That is more or less the same as in the first half of last year. The export volume of purple sweet potatoes is relatively small in comparison with the regular potato, which is a common product in overseas markets. However, more and more consumers show an interest in purple sweet potatoes. The European market demand for purple sweet potatoes grows on a daily basis. European markets sell the sweet potato in large volumes. The market price is around 0.8-1.3 USD per kg."
Although the number of Chinese exporters of purple sweet potatoes is not that large, competition in the international sweet potato market is intense. Major producers of purple sweet potatoes include Japan and countries in South America. The only way to secure a position for purple sweet potatoes produced in China is to improve product quality.
As for the methods of packaging and distributing the purple sweet potatoes, manager Chen explained that, "we use different packaging methods based on the various requirements of numerous markets. Take for example the wholesale markets, we supply them with 10kg bags of sweet potatoes, but for supermarkets we package the sweet potatoes in 2kg bags. The purple sweet potato survives storage exceptionally well. We therefore usually transport the sweet potatoes by sea freight. We prepare the sweet potatoes before export in accordance with European Union regulations. We make sure that when the sweet potatoes arrive that the food is safe and that there is enough time for retailers to sell them while they are fresh."
