Domestic campaign is nearing season end

"Blueberry prices are rising week by week"

The domestic season of the culture blueberries is in the final stretch. The last batches of the year will be harvested in the next two to three weeks, although some quantities will remain until around the middle of September. "We notice that the goods are getting significantly scarcer: prices are rising week by week," reports a trader of Faby Fruchtgroßhandel, based in Steinkirchen.

"Some producers in our main growing area stop early, because they do not have the appropriate amounts of late varieties such as Liberty, Elisabeth or Aurora." The market is now also open for goods from other origins to extend the (northern) European season. For a final balance, it is still too early, despite the upcoming conclusion of the season, people from Faby Fruit said. "In 2018, due to the heat, large volumes all arrived in the market at the same time. This affected the marketing accordingly.

Certainly it has not been that bad this year. Despite the steady expansion of the (northern) German acreage for cultivated blueberries, in this season goods from other sources also appeared in some retail  branches."

Independent of the weather
Sales of blueberries are less dependent on the weather. This goes particularly for the last domestic berry fruits. "All in all, blueberries are a year-round product that is also purchased by the consumer irrespective of the weather."
