We are now at the beginning of the honey pomelo season. Current supplies on the market are mainly from Chengmai in Hainan, Meizhou in Guangdong and Nanning in Guangxi. Crops from the Yinzhou region in Fujian will also become available later this month. The Statistics Department at the Xinfadi Market said that although the price had dropped slightly, it’s still higher than the same period last year.
The reason for this is that supported by overall high fruit prices, expectations of sellers and farmers are high. Another reason is that new varieties just becoming commercialized need to go through a cognitive cycle in the market. According to sellers, strong winds and rainfall encountered during the flowering season in April have made petals fell off, resulting in lower yield.
Sellers reported that production dropped by about 10% to 20%, which indicates that the price may stay firm for some time this year. In a later stage, prices are likely to fall to a greater extent when crops from each production area become available in large volumes.
