Costa Rica's banana producers reserved about 2012

The banana sector reported an increase of 3% in its exports value regarding 2010, but it keeps some reserves about the behavior in 2012. Although, the sector assures that the 140,000 jobs generated by the activity are safe for the new year. By the end of 2011, banana producer's sales were around us$768,000,000, a number higher than the us$744,000,000 sold in 2010. This represents an improvement in the industry's condition, translated in a 1% raise in amounts, as it was exported 1,000,000 boxes more than in the previous year. If the expectation on production didn't drop thanks to the low incidence of weather conditions, by the end of the year there's always some tension between producers, as in that time starts the raining season in the production area, as recognized by Jorge Sauma, manager for the National Banana Corporation - Corbana.

Presently, Costa Rica takes the first place in the world, if you count on the country's average. But despite the optimism at the year's closing, analysts from the sector consider that is opportune to call up the attention about setbacks to be faced in the coming period. The price of agricultural supplies, the cost with working ands and specially the dollar exchange rate in the local plaza, come as problems to be faced. On top of it, the kind of exchange paid on the more used foreign currency, after the settlement of a system of exchange bands affected the ones exporting. "Not only we are saying that something must be done, but experts like Eduardo Lizano and Alberto Dent pointed that the present system is one damaging the ones getting devaluated dollars, to face obligations in overvalued colonies", pointed the manager for Corbana. At the Presidential House were presented options, like a capital declaration, to try change this behaviour, but there's still got no answer, as ended by Sauma Aguilar
