On the blueberry market, an increase of players who want to be part of this growing market can be seen. In the EU, supply is dominated by a number of important players, according to figures from Eurostat. In 2015, Poland had a leading role with an area of 3,200 hectares. Poland is followed by countries such as Germany (2,480 hectares), Spain (1,800 hectares), Portugal (1,330 hectares) and the Netherlands (740 hectares). Poland has 33 per cent of the combined area of these five countries.
A few years later it can clearly be seen that all countries expanded their areas. The combined area, however, is still dominated by Poland with 46 per cent (8,090 hectares) in 2018. This is mostly at the expense of Germany, which now has 17 per cent (3,040 hectares) of the combined area, while this was previously 26 per cent.
Even though the Netherlands isn’t at the top of the list of countries with the largest areas, a rising line can still be seen. An increase of 26 per cent was realised in the 2015/18 period, amounting to 930 hectares.
An increase in blueberry production can also be seen among a number of Eastern European countries. In Latvia, the area has even more than doubled: from 200 to 500 hectares. Croatia’s also showing a good increase from 90 to 250 hectares. In Serbia, where abbGrowers is established as well, the production area amounts to about 100 hectares. However, Serbia’s figures haven’t been taken into Eurostat’s account yet.
