Daniel Blanco, of Mogalla: "We must stand behind the quality of Spanish garlic this year"

"Garlic prices are not rising as much now, but the prospects are good"

The Spanish white garlic campaign kicked off with a good harvest in terms of both quality and quantity, with a predominance of medium sized calibres. Sales have been good since the beginning, and although prices haven't been rising as much as at the start, there are still good prospects for the coming months.

“We are very happy with the results achieved with this year's harvest, both in terms of productivity and quality,” says Daniel Blanco, Commercial Director of Mogalla. “We only produce white garlic and the truth is that the quality obtained is exceptional, with a very good external color and very healthy cloves. Calibres mostly oscillate between 50 and 60 mm, so in general, there is a lack of both small and large calibers this year,” he says.

As for the marketing, according to Daniel Blanco, the campaign started with better prices than at the end of last year, and there has been an upward trend throughout the month of July, following the steps of Chinese garlic. “It is true that the price of garlic in China seems to have stagnated or even decreased a bit in recent weeks, but we must take advantage of the quality we have this campaign in Spain and try keeping prices up. A good volume of garlic has been sold at the beginning of the campaign, and now, with the rest already in chambers, there should be no reason to get nervous and lower the prices.”

Mogalla sells its garlic mainly in France, the UK, Italy, Germany, the US and Canada. "We have been expanding our production for several years, cultivating the crop on our own farms, where we have the entire technical process under control. The idea is to be able to reach new markets, but also provide a good service to our current customers throughout the year."

This season, the Andalusian company has launched a new line with the production and marketing of peeled garlic cloves in different formats. "In addition, we have built new chambers and handling rooms for garlic in our fruit and vegetable plant in Extremadura with the goal of improving our processes and offering the best possible product to our customers," says Daniel Blanco.
