Mexico's avocado has become a very popular fruit in China and it can even be purchased through mobile phone platforms such as Tmall, Alibaba, and JD.com.
During 2018, Mexico increased the volume of avocado shipments to China to 14,972 tons, i.e. 71% more than the 8,750 tons shipped in the previous year, according to data from the Association of Avocado Producers, Packers, and Exporters of Mexico (APEAM).
In China, there are brands like Mokado and Bravocado, which import avocado and prefer the Mexican fruit over the fruit from other origins, such as Peru or Chile, which are competing strongly in the market. In fact, China was designated by the Mexican avocado sector in 2018, as its fourth strategic market, after the United States, Canada, and Japan.
In 2018, the sector invested US $500,000 to conduct avocado promotion actions in China. In 2019, this figure has doubled, with the aim of reaching 100 million potential consumers in that market.
