Rahim Deniz, Deniz Fruit:

First Turkish Sultana grapes on the Dutch market

This week, the first Sultana grapes will be arriving on the Dutch market again. Deniz Fruit from Rotterdam doesn’t just import the grapes, they also guarantee the harvest, quality inspections, packing and transport of the grapes from Turkey to their customers.

The grapes from Deniz go to their own packing station in Turkey

Sultana grapes
“It will be a promising season,” Rahim Deniz says. “Despite a few days of bad weather in Turkey, including hail, we can expect more grapes on the market than last year. Production in the country has increased. Demand is good, just like last year, and because of the larger supply, the grapes are less expensive than in 2018. The grapes are mostly meant for the Netherlands and Belgium, although we also supply other European markets, such as Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Up to a few years ago, we also exported Sultana grapes to Russia and Ukraine, but we don’t do that as much anymore.” The Sultana grape season lasts until late November or early December.

Guaranteed quality
As importer, Deniz is involved with the grapes from the moment they’re harvested. “I want to be able to offer only the best quality of fresh Sultana grapes to my customers, and I therefore also check for colour and flavour. That’s why we pack the grapes ourselves in our own packing station in Turkey, and why we subject them to quality inspections. That quality can be achieved by working with the growers in Turkey. A proportion of the grapes are processed into raisins in Turkey.”

Other products from Turkey
“This week, we started with Santamaria pears and Turkish peaches in addition to the grapes,” Rahim says. “The peaches from Turkey are incredibly juicy and taste very different from Spanish peaches. In a few weeks, we’ll start with pomegranates and quinces from Turkey. We’ll have the Santamaria pears until March/April.”
