"Malaysian durian growers planning to expand production after gaining entrance to China"

“In May, when the news broke that Malaysian frozen durian gained access to the Chinese market, many growers began to look for new plantations and plan to increase production. The overall prospect of the Malaysian durian market is promising. Currently, there are 13 companies in the country allowed to export frozen durians to China,” said Yang, manager of Tropicana Corporation Berhad.

The durian seasons in Malaysia last from June to August and from November to January of the following year, and frozen durian can be sold almost all year round. “Durian from Thailand has beat us to it and gained access to China ten years ago, so the most well-known durian variety in China is the Thai gold pillow durian. Consumers in China are already very familiar with its pricing and shape, but we are not worried, as we have products that allow us to differentiate from the others.

Malaysia is known as the ‘land of durian’, where two hundred varieties are grown. The most famous varieties include musang king, sultan, XO, and durian merah. Among them, musang king from Malaysia is regarded as the king of durian. D197 musang king is the most premium variety, with a sweet and fragrant taste and unique flavor. This variety must be naturally ripened until the fruit falls from the tree, where picking the fruit by hand is absolutely forbidden. This ensures the highest level of quality and taste of the product."

“Our products are mainly exported to China, Singapore, Europe, America, and Australia. As musang king is becoming more and more well-known, the demand in overseas markets, especially in China, is growing rapidly. From 2012 to 2017, exports of Malaysian musang king surged by 143% and prices soared by 530%. The Ministry of Agriculture of Malaysia expects exports of durian to increase five times by 2030. Although prices of musang king are high due to their specific planting and growing requirements and high transportation standards, there is still a shortage of supply on the market, and the prospect is promising as it becomes increasingly popular among Chinese consumers. Especially in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, known as the first-tier cities, there are many durian products on the market, such as durian pizzas, durian cheesecakes, and durian and coconut drinks, all quite expensive,” shared Yang.

Long growing cycles, complex management, and demanding transportation all contribute to the high prices. Therefore, although it is a much-loved fruit, durian is only available as a niche product. As it has a long growing cycle and a short shelf life, “with the traditional sea freight shipping, it is almost impossible for consumers in China to enjoy musang king with the same quality as when it’s freshly picked, but the liquid nitrogen freezing technology we used can extend its shelf life to 18 months, while ensuring the best taste. Our processed frozen durian is shipped from our growing center in Malaysia to Chinese consumers in the cold chain. We have a 1,200-acre durian plantation in Gelang Patah in Johor, Malaysia, and own a complete set of relevant customs clearance and quality inspection certificates. Our Golden Acres durian is produced from our own orchard, with thick flesh and small pits. The flesh is golden in color and rich in flavor. The taste is slightly bitter at first and then becomes sweet with a sweet aftertaste. Your mouth will be filled with aurora, and the rich taste comes in layers, bringing you an unforgettable experience. "
