First Gala variety apples already picked

South Tyrolean apple industry launches main harvest

The starting gun for this year's apple harvest in the important production area South Tyrol has sounded. The first fresh apples of the Gala variety are being picked from the trees as we speak. The season has officially started, according to the South Tyrolean apple consortium.

Preparations for the main harvest have been going on for weeks: South Tyrolean apple growers have brought large crates to the apple orchards, prepared machines and have carried out final checks on the apple trees. Now the fruits are picked individually from the trees by the harvest helpers: all different in shape, color and size.

Wide range of grades
There are a total of 13 South Tyrolean apple g.g.A. varieties that are harvested from August to November. Among these are Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Braeburn, Winesap and Idared.
