The Honduran 2018-19 melon campaign has ended with positive figures. According to data provided by the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), the export value has risen to 110.1 million dollars, i.e. 38.1 million dollars more than in the previous campaign.
The exported volume has increased by 15.8 million kilograms between the 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns, from 265.2 million kilos to 281 million kilos in the current campaign.
International prices in the period analyzed increased from 27 to 39 cents per kilogram, that is, 12 cents or 45.7 percentage more.
According to Arnaldo Castillo, the Secretary of Economic Development, another factor that has contributed to this increase in exports was the opening of new markets for the country's melon, such as Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Dubai, and Singapore.
Sustaining that growth in the export value won't be easy. According to producers, Brazil's strong competition in the European market has generated a melon oversupply that has led to lower prices.
Meanwhile, exports to the United States are declining due to the strong competition of Guatemala's fruit production.
