New Verduyn factory at 100% production

“Still a shortage on the Belgian cabbage market”

To serve their clients even better, the Belgian company, Verduyn, has taken a new industrial building into use. "The new factory is already running at 100%. We are very satisfied," says Alexander Verduyn, Verduyn's CEO.

"It was a tough year, the dry weather caused problems for us. It is difficult to harvest carrots at the moment. We have to irrigate a lot to keep the carrots going."

“We have been busy harvesting for more than a month in Belgium. The carrots are of excellent quality. It is just the yields that are lower. Carrot exports are a bit slow during the holidays. The summer months are usually calmer," he says.

“White cabbage still very expensive”

“Besides carrots, winter vegetables have also suffered due to the dry weather. These include cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. White cabbage is still very expensive. However, we expect the shortage of this product to be resolved soon."

"There have also been some problems with the broccoli supply. This has resulted in healthy demand. Prices are not high; they are right for this time of year," explains Alexander.

"The whole situation depends on the weather. Rain is predicted each week, but not much has fallen yet. So, we keep hoping. We are also trying to anticipate the situation as well as possible."

“Europe is going to have minimal carrot and other vegetable surpluses this year

“If this dry weather continues, we are going to have very little vegetable surpluses in Europe this year. This counts for carrots too. It is now the second year that it has been very dry," the CEO continues.

"Together with growers, we have to find solutions. More water will be needed in the coming years. We must be able to irrigate everywhere. The product yields also need to be kept on track."

"It is most important that we can serve our clients as well as possible. This is also why we constructed the new plant. We built it for our clients. We can now calibrate and look after our product even better. We can also respond to our clients' specifications," Verduyn concludes.
