The Ministry of Rural and Agricultural Food Development of Michoacan reported that the entity produces 8 out of every 10 avocados in the country, with an export value of 2.392 billion dollars.
The agency also stressed that the entity exports one million 22 thousand tons of avocado to the United States, Canada, Japan, Europe, Central American markets, and China.
There are approximately 40,000 avocado producers in the state and the sector generates more than 16,800 permanent jobs, as well as more than 70,000 temporary jobs a year.
This ranks Michoacan as the leading producer of avocados and berries in the world.
In 2018 Michoacan planted 24,243 hectares of berries with a production volume of 775 thousand tons, which generated a value of 22 thousand million pesos.
They also stated that Michoacan was the leading national producer of bird of paradise plants, sweet potato, cranberry, starfruit, custard apple, peach, strawberry, guava, lentil, lemon, lion's hand, moringa, forage chickpea, blackberry, and avocado.
In the last decade, the entity has been the country's leading producer of agricultural products, by value, exceeding 85 billion pesos annually, they added.
Michoacan's Ministry of Rural and Agricultural Food Development stressed that more than 1,150,000 hectares of the state were used for planting.
The agricultural sector is a strategic sector in the entity, as it accounts for 12.7 percent of the State's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), they added.
