Yellow peaches are not selling well in the Chinese market and some of the yellow peaches became unmarketable this year. The reason for this poor market performance is competition between peach traders. In order to beat each other to the market, they harvest the peaches before the fruit is ripe enough. The unripe peaches do not meet the consumer expectation for sweetness or flavor.
Traders are eager to enter the market before their competition because of the abundant peach production volume this year. According to farmers, the traders who sell seedlings have vigorously been promoting peaches in the last two years.
The yellow peach price was around 6-12 yuan [0.85-1.71 USD] per 0.5 kg in previous years. This year, however, the price dropped to as little as 0.7 yuan [0.10 USD] per 0.5 kg. Larger peaches are sold per basket for 10 yuan [1.42 USD], while medium peaches sell for 6 yuan [0.85 USD] per basket. This is barely enough to pay the labor cost.
