Nanotechnologies and semi-closed greenhouses for protected cultivation

Nanotechnologies too can be applied to regulate the protected environment in a greenhouse, especially in places with difficult weather conditions. Idromeccanica Lucchini, a specialist in the design and manufacture of greenhouses, can do just that.

"A lot of elements must be considered when a greenhouse is set up in an area with difficult climate conditions. For example, we have increased our interventions in Thailand, Pakistan, the Gulf area, the Middle East and South America. There are areas where light conditions and temperatures are so high that it would be impossible to cultivate. But, thanks to innovation, we manage to air-condition greenhouses making the interior cooler," explains Matteo Lucchini.

Nanotechnologies can work as a shield against infrared rays while maintaining transmittance unaltered. This means that the quantity of light that reaches plants is not modified, but the temperature is lowered. In addition, films last longer as rays are reflected. In some cases, they can last double the time of normal films.

"Adiabatic panels with humidity extractors are also used. In addition, a reduced camp length favors module replication. We can provide turnkey solutions from the smallest greenhouses to ones covering dozens of hectares. All systems are included and we take care of our customers right from the design part."

Experimentation and innovation go hand in hand at Lucchini - the latter is impossible without the former. The company is now researching a new kind of greenhouse that can be set up in areas with a very dry weather and high temperatures.

"We are talking about semi-closed greenhouses and we filter the air exchange. There is an extra casing that monitors the air so as to check the air masses that remain inside the greenhouse, avoiding exchange with outside air where climate conditions would not make it possible to grow anything. It is a considerable investment, but operating costs are low."

Classic greenhouses become more competitive than simple glass ones, even in extreme weather conditions.
