Honduras, the second biggest exporter of pineapples in Central America after Costa Rica, forecast it would export 81,000 tons of pineapple in 2019. This volume is 8% higher than the volume exported in 2018, which reached 75,000 tons and reported 32 million dollars.
German Perez, the regional secretary of the National Association of Industrialists (Andi), said that pineapple exports grew by 8 to 10% annually.
The area devoted to the production of pineapple is about 5,000 hectares nationwide, according to the industrial leader. Dole company has the largest production area in the Atlantic sector with some 2,406 hectares of crops.
The main markets for Hondura's pineapple are the United States, the Netherlands and Central America, among others.
