“The first Corina pears are expected again within a few weeks. The growers start picking around 1 August. Last year we also started around the beginning of August, but in principle, that is pretty early,” says Corina coordinator Willy Dillen. “Although the pear market is not yet completely empty at the moment, we expect that the prospects for Corina are good. The pears that were picked last year suffered from quality problems and the new Corina pears are very fresh.”
The Corina has had a good growing season. “I think even better than last year. The size and quality is expected to be a lot better, because this year it has not been warm for so long, unlike last year. Despite this, we had good sales last year. The product was on the small side, but the demand was very good. Last year we sold 2.3 million kilos and this year the volume will also come close to last year," continues Dillen. “The largest volumes of the Corina are sold in the United Kingdom, but Belgium and Scandinavia are also important markets. We are also working on France. "
“Corina did not suffer much from the dramatic hard fruit market last year. The pears mainly go to the neighboring countries where more is paid for the pear than in Eastern Europe. And because it is a club variety, Corina is better protected by the club system. Only the best pears are sold under the brand name Corina and as a result, we have a lot more control on quality and therefore a better price. Also, the return on the Corina is a lot better than on Conference. In this way, growers can still achieve a good return in these difficult times, " Willy concludes.
