Chinese lychees enter South American market for the first time

"Lychees are considered high-end fruits in the international market. This is the first season that we have exported our lychees to Chile. This is also the first time that Chinese lychees have been exported to South America. Chinese lychees are harvested when South American lychees are in the off-season. We have confidence that the quality of lychee produced in China is good enough for the South American market and we are excited to provide South American consumers with the opportunity to taste the flavor of Chinese lychees," said manager Chen of Guangdong Fuyi Agricultural Product Co., Ltd.

The blossom rate of Chinese lychees was relatively low this season because the winter of 2018 was quite warm. The overall production volume greatly declined as a result. "The price of lychee is quite high this year because we lost much of the lychee harvest. The price usually starts high early in the season and then slowly drops. This year, however, the price remained high and even slightly increased towards the end of the season. Even though the production volume declined, the retail price is quite high and our export value steadily increased."

"Lychees from Southeast Asia enter the market around the same time as the Chinese lychee. Domestic lychees therefore meet strong competition in the international market. However, Chinese lychees have a slight advantage because the flavor is unique and there is proper infrastructure to keep the lychee fresh. We mainly export our products to the USA, Canada, Dubai, Australia, Southeast Asia, and Europe.

The most popular varieties in the international market are Concubine's Smile and Black Leaf lychee. The Concubine's Smile is well-known. The fruit flesh is thick and the stone is small. The Concubine's Smile lychee is very sweet. The Black Leaf lychee is bright red and the flavor is pure and sweet. The price is also very reasonable, which makes this a popular variety among consumers," explained manager Chen. "We pay the utmost care at every stage of production and processing, and manage the entire process efficiently, which makes our lychee popular with overseas consumers and allows us to expand our export volume.

For example, after we pick the lychee from the trees, we immediately begin the packaging process, which takes place in a strictly-controlled, closed environment. We manage the packaging process in various ways to meet the diverse requirements from different markets. Other than that, transport also takes a heavy toll on the product quality of lychee. The research department in our company specifically develops technology to better protect lychees during transportation. This is also one of the reasons that our company can guarantee product quality and excellent flavor from plantation to the table of the consumer."

The main lychee varieties produced by Fuyi Agricultural Product include Fragrance of Gui Flower, Concubine's Smile, Black Leaf, Rice Cake, Exquisite Flavor, and Jade Purse lychee varieties.

Our plantations are located in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Fujian. The overall surface area of our plantations is around 165,200 acres and 5 of our plantations meet European Union plantation standards."
