Data from the National Bureau of Statistics China shows that the price of fresh fruit in June, 2019, increased by 42.7% in comparison with the same period last year. The price reached a new historic high. The rising price of fruit is one of the main reasons for the rising price of products in general. The price of fresh fruit already experienced a major "rising wave" in April and May. In those months, the price of fresh fruit increased by 11.9% and 26.7% respectively.
CCTV reported that large-scale fruit companies purchased 7.9 million tons of apples for the average price of 4-4.5 yuan [0.58-0.65 USD] per 0.5 kg in October 2018 and sold them for 6 yuan [0.87 USD] per 0.5 kg in April 2019 or 7 yuan [1.02 USD] per 0.5 kg in May. The most recent wholesale price already reached 8 yuan [1.16 USD] per 0.5 kg.
Even though this year's early-season apples already entered the market, the overall price decline will still take some time. The price increase is not just seasonal, but also the result of a rising cost price.
