Spain's Consumer Organization publishes list of the best stores to buy fruit

Back in March, the Spanish Consumers Organization (OCU) carried out a study on the country's best stores to buy fruit, comparing a typical shopping basket (containing salad tomatoes, Canary bananas, Conference pears, Golden apples and strawberries) in 67 stores in Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Valencia and Seville, including 10 municipal markets, 35 supermarkets, 12 hypermarkets and 10 greengrocers. In the study, factors such as the price per kilo, the product's appearance, the taste, the information provided and the attention to the consumer were taken into account.

According to the report, the chain Ahorramás is the best supermarket to buy fruit in Spain, with a score of 84 points. The second place is for the supermarket chain Aldi, and the third one for MAS supermarkets.

Regarding the flavor and appearance of fruit, the OCU stresses that the highest scores were achieved by the fruit stores from food markets, although they are more expensive. However, these same stores fail in providing information about the fruit, despite the fact that they are legally required to do so. Super and hypermarkets don't have this problem.

With the exception of Barcelona, the lowest prices can be found in local neighborhood stores, ​​although these do not stand out in terms of taste and appearance.

Among the supermarkets and hypermarkets, the cheapest are Lidl, Eroski, Alcampo, Dia and Vidal (less than 10 Euro for the typical shopping basket), while Hipercor (12 Euro), Bonpreu and Condis (11.5 Euro) are the three most expensive chains. Meanwhile, Alcampo, Hipercor and Carrefour are the firms with the widest range of products.
