Wilko van der Zwaard, Wilkofruit:

“Dutch cherry season currently at its peak”

Wilkofruit’s cherry season has erupted. “The supply of Belgian cherries is currently at its peak. The weather’s very good for the development of the cherries, and we’re very positive about quality. We have daily, fresh supply of cherries from auctions and various growers,” says Wilko van der Zwaard of Wilkofruit. The company has been in the cherry trade for four generations since 1934.

“Besides Belgian cherries, we also have quite a bit of supply of Yaka cherries from Greece. The Yaka cherries are considered to be part of the better segment of the Greek cherries. From Turkey we have Alara cherries under our own Gaudias brand. The cherries are available loose in five kilos or in plastic bags, which look great regarding presentation,” Wilko says.

“The cherry season will be good with the Kordia and Regina varieties for about three more weeks, but after these varieties, supply will start declining. That’s why we’ll start with the first cherries from Canada and the US in about two weeks. We’re very positive about the current cherry season, and we’re feeling hopeful about selling even more cherries in the coming period,” Wilko concludes.
