US apples and pears: A year in organics

Superfresh Growers® issued a release which summarized the performance of the organic apple and pear category for the year. In essence, Organic pears and apples experienced growth in the last year, bolstering both categories. Superfresh Growers® said it takes a look into each category, highlighting where apples and pears each succeeded in the last 52 weeks.

Organic apples experienced 5 percent national sales growth. Gala led the charge, representing 34 percent of all organic apple sales. Gala was followed by Honeycrisp, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Pink Lady® apples. Winter promotions helped organic movement, and the spring and summer had missed opportunities for promotions.

Organic pears fared even better, with a national sales growth of 7 percent. Bartlett was king of organic pears, representing 47.4 percent of all organic pear sales at $14.8 million. Anjou and Bosc round out the core three organic pear varieties. Combined, these three represent 89.5 percent of all organic pear sales.

New crop apple and pear season will begin in August, beginning with Organic Gala apples and Organic Bartlett and Starkrimson pears.
