It hasn't been a great year for Italian fruit cultivation in general due to weather problems. Sicily was no exception and, in fact, coscia pear productions have dropped.
"Quantities are much lower than in the previous season, so prices are higher. It is the logical consequence of the demand-supply ratio, but we will do what we can to mitigate any excess," reports Paolo Parlapiano, sales and marketing manager for the Sicilian company.
How did we get to this?
"Weather conditions weren't favorable during setting, leading to diminished quantities. From a qualitative point of view, the low quantities will mean larger grades, so quality is expected to be excellent."
"Production and commercialization will continue until September. Our produce is fresh and not treated, unlike a lot of the produce found in supermarkets that is stocked for months and months."
Coscia di Ribera pears are excellent eaten fresh and they are also suitable to make various dishes. Eating seasonal fruit (and vegetables) is recommended by doctors especially in summer and especially for children and older people.
"These pears have a unique extra-sweet flavor as they are produced in a particularly-suitable territory, which is the same where Arancia di Ribera D.O.P.is produced (of which Parlapiano Fruit is a leading trader)."
