The heat and lack of rainfall ensure that early potato yields in Lower Austria remain very low at the beginning of July. Wherever it is possible to clear, farmers clear the land quickly. The harvest of the new potato is already reasonably advanced. However, the heat also allows the later stocks to be picked up quickly, so that no lofty yields are expected at the warehouse locations. This year, large potatoes are virtually absent.
The persistently hot conditions also increase the pest pressure. In some cases, the wireworm infestation is already worrying. Sales of potatoes have declined slightly due to the extreme temperatures and the beginning of the holidays. Due to the low supply, the price level in Lower Austria and Burgenland remains stable. Early in the week, prices were at € 40 per 100 kg. In Upper Austria heuriger are now being harvested. The prices have yielded slightly and are at €45 per 100 kg.
Onion sales somewhat down
The offer of Lower Austrian winter onion has become very large in recent weeks. At the same time, sales are rather weak. In the food trade there are still quantities of foreign goods in stock which block the sales of domestic products, the heat generally dampens demand. Exports are cautious as more and more goods are now on the market in the destination countries. The onion prices of the new crop have dropped last week, but should stabilize now. At the beginning of the week, prices were between €45 and 50 per 100 kg, depending on the quality.
Marketing volumes are rising
The marketing volumes of Lower Austrian carrots from the new harvest are slowly becoming more. The market situation remains stable and prices unchanged. For carrots of the new harvest, the prices are in 5kg bag, at €45 to 50 per 100 kg.
